Cork Murder Probed

The police in Togher in Cork have launched an investigation into the shooting dead of a man in his 40s last night.

The man was taken to Cork University Hospital where he was subsequently pronounced dead.

The man, named locally as Gerard Stanton, was shot as he was about to get into his car at his rented home at West Lawn off Sarsfield Road in Wilton shortly before 8pm.

It's believed that a gunman approached Mr Stanton and shot him at least once in the chest with possibly a shotgun before fleeing to a waiting van.

Mr Stanton's partner was present at the time but was uninjured while the couple's two young children who were in the car escaped unhurt but were deeply traumatized.

Mr Stanton's partner raised the alarm and Mr Stanton was rushed by ambulance to Cork University Hospital but he was pronounced dead at the hospital a short time later.

Gardaí, under Supt Charlie Barry, contacted the State's Pathologist Office and Assistant State Pathologist, Dr Margaret Bolster began a post mortem on the deceased shortly after 10am.

Gardaí have cordoned off the scene of the shooting and a large area around the quiet estate of two story terraced houses which can be accessed by both road and by foot across a green area.

It was unclear last night what direction the van headed once it went back on to Sarsfield Road - either down to the South Link or back up the hill where it links up with the road from Doughcloyne.

Gardaí found a burnt out van which they believe was used in the shooting just over two miles away in Waterfall not far from the Viaduct on the main Cork-Bandon Road.

They've appealed to anyone who may have seen a red Hiace or Liteace van in the West Lawn, Harley Court or White Oaks area between 7pm and 8pm to contact them at Togher Garda Station.

They've also appealed to anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity in the West Lawn area prior to the shooting to contact them at a special incident room at Togher on 021-4947120.
