Pensioner Dies After Window Fall

The funeral of an elderly widow who fell to her death from a second floor window is taking place this morning.

Maura Looney died shortly after 7.30am on Friday when she fell onto external railings from the second floor of the Care Choice nursing home on the Middle Glanmire Road in Montenotte on the north side of Cork city.

Gardai and the Health Service Executive have begun separate inquiries.

Ms Looney recently moved into the private nursing home on New Year's Eve for two weeks care.

The pensioner was from Congress Road in Turners Cross, Cork and was an aunt of north side Fianna Fáil councillor Tony Fitzgerald.

He said her death had deeply saddened her family.

"Were all just devastated. It's a terrible shock for everyone," he said.

Ms Looney was close to her three brothers Thomas, Willie and Teddy Fitzgerald and to her circle of nieces and nephews.

She spent the Christmas holidays in the company of her brothers and their respective families.

Her late husband Thomas was an employee of Thomas Crosbie Holdings.

The director of CareChoice Ltd, Paul Kingston said that he and his staff were in complete shock over the death.

12-Year-Old Sues Parents Over 2007 Car Crash
A schoolgirl is suing her mother and father over a car crash which left her seriously injured and killed her sister and friend. Faith Varden Carberry has launched an action for damages in the High Court against her mother Mary Carberry (36), who was the uninsured driver of the car, and got so drunk on the day of the crash she "blacked out".

Little Island Pfizer Plant To Close
US pharmaceutical company Pfizer is to close its manufacturing plant at Little Island in Cork, blaming falling demand for key products. According to the Irish Time the company will move Little Island production to nearby Ringaskiddy early next year.

Gardaí Search For Hit-And-Run Driver
Gardaí are searching for a driver involved in a hit-and-run incident, after a 12-year-old boy was hit while crossing Thomas Davis Street in the Blackpool area at about 21:50. The boy is being treated at Cork University Hospital, where he is said to be in a "comfortable condition".
