Man Charged Over Limerick Shooting

A man has been charged in connection with a shooting incident in Limerick that led to the death of a local man.

Gardai investigating the fatal shooting, which occurred last Tuesday evening, said today they have charged Kenneth Collopy of Kilonan, Ballysimon, Co Limerick, over the incident.

The man is expected to appear before Limerick District Court this evening at 9.30pm charged with the murder of 24-year-old Daniel Fitzgerald at Cloughnadromin, Ballysimon, Co Limerick on December 8th last.

In a brief hearing last night, a heavily guarded court heard the teenager made no reply to the charge.

Defence solicitor John Herbert was assigned to represent Mr Collopy who was granted free legal aid.

Judge Aeneas McCarthy remanded the 19-year-old in custody to Limerick prison until December 17th next when he is due to appear before the same court via video link.

Yesterday it was revealed that a man in his late 20s and a woman in her early 20s were arrested over the weekend over the incident while a further four people - one male and three females - were released without charge and six people, five men and one woman, remained custody.

According to Gardaí, a total of ten people were questioned in connection with the murder.

Just after the shooting, gardaí sources said the 24-year-old Limerick man, Danny Fitzgerald, from Old Pallas, was killed when a gunman opened fire at his uncle’s cottage in Cloughnadromin, Ballysimon, Co Limerick.

The killing is believed to be linked to an arson attack on a vehicle the previous night, which took place at a house in the area.
