Irish Man On Life Support After Sydney Assault

A 23-year-old Irish man is now on life support after an attack in Sydney.

Gearóid Walsh was viciously attacked at a takeaway food shop in the Sydney suburb of Coogee last Sunday.

Police believe he had been drinking at a number of pubs before a fracas insued, during which he was punched and fell to the pavement.

Mr Walsh is on a life-support machine at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney.

The victim's brother and sister are believed to live in the city, while his mother has flown out to care for her son.

Detective Inspector Paul Simpkins said: 'The man only arrived in Australia a month ago and had been spending time between his brother's house in Brisbane and his sister in Randwick.'

Police have issued a description of a man they want to question in connection with the attack after CCTV footage emerged, taken on Sunday.

He is described as being of white/European appearance, 25 to 30 years old, 175cm tall, medium build, with short brown and slightly curly hair and a clean-shaven, round face and wearing a white T-shirt and jeans.

"This is a sad incident for the family," Detective Inspector Paul Simpkins said in a statement.

"Gearoid only arrived in Australia a month ago on a working visa and had been spending time between his brother's house in Brisbane and his sister in Randwick."
