Couple Arrested In Operation Platinum

A man and a woman have been arrested in connection with a major ongoing Gardaí operation.

The investigation into organised crime, codenamed operation Platinum, led today to a series of six searches at professional offices in Limerick along with two houses in Ennis and Limerick.

In the course of one of the searches a handgun (subject to technical examination) was recovered. Gardaí also seized documentation.

The investigation is being conducted in conjunction with Criminal Assists Bureau, local Gardai from Limerick and Clare, and local C.A.B. profilers.

The male, who is in his late 30s, and female in her 20s were arrested at 8am on Tuesday morning. Both are currently detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act in Ennis Garda Station.

Operation Platinum was launched in response to growing organised crime in Limerick led by local Detective Units in conjunction with locally based Divisional Asset Profilers and the Criminal Assets Bureau.

In May, some 150 premises were searched primarily in the Limerick area, but also in the surrounding counties and in Dublin, in an operation that involved some 250 Gardai.

During the course of these searches a substantial quantity of documentation was seized which is currently being examined, along with a range of computer equipment.

Also seized were two vehicles, cash to a value in excess of €100,000 and various drug seizures with a potential street value of in excess of €200,000 were made, along with two firearms and a quantity of ammunition.

Three men, aged in their late 20's were arrested during the course of the operation.
