Christ Church Ransacked

Robbers have caused extensive damage to a recently restored cathedral in Waterford.

It is believed that man tens of thousands of euro worth of damage has been caused during a break-in at Christ Church Cathedral in Waterford city.

A ceiling in the Church that had only been restored in 2003 was damaged when those involved in the break-in were gaining gain access to an office through the roof last night.

Rubble from the ceiling also fell into the back of the historic Thomas Elliott organ, which dates back to 1817, causing extensive damage.

The organ had previously undergone major restoration in 2002.

The vestry was also ransacked. It is believed those involved in the break-in were searching for money.

Gardaí are investigating the break-in.

Man Arrested After Car Crashes Through Trinity Gates
A 68-year-old man has been arrested after crashing through the gates of Trinity College Dublin. The car rammed the gates a number of times, which had already been closed by security staff, before breaking through and causing damage to the gates. The car continued to drive up Dawson Street and also caused damage to other cars.

35 people have been made redundant after a fire destroyed a pet food plant at Clonmellon on the Westmeath-Meath border. Staff at the Pet Treats plant have been temporarily laid off due to the extensive damage caused at the 18,000sq ft plant at the weekend.

Irish Forensic Medicine ‘Patchy’
A leading doctor has described forensics in Ireland as “patchy” at an annual medical conference. Professor Denis Cusack, who is the Coroner for Co Kildare, was speaking at the Irish Medical Organisation’s (IMO) conference being held in Kilarney.

Additional Funds Released For Storm Damage Repairs
Minister Simon Harris TD, Minister of State with special responsibility for the Office of Public Works, has confirmed that remaining funds – allocated to local councils last year for storm damage repairs, following the first period of severe weather in Winter 2013/2014 – is being divided out to the local authorities.

'Taoiseach Uncovered' Fails To Amuse
Following an 'artistic stunt', featuring stylised nude portraits of Taoiseach Brian Cowen, the gardái has proved to be un-amused. They have quizzed the artist behind the prank after the Bolton Street teacher, Conor Casby presented himself at Pearse Street Gardái station where he was interviewed last night.
