County GAA Player Dies In Weekend Road Carnage

A county footballer was one of five people killed on the roads in a slew of fatal collisions over the weekend.

Ciaran Shannon, 37, from Annacurra in Co Wicklow, was on his way to Blessington to appear for his local club on Saturday afternoon when he was involved in a four-vehicle pile-up.

The collision, involving two cars and two SUVs, occurred at Mullacagh on the N81 near Hollywood Cross at 4.30pm.

His wife, who is pregnant with their fourth child, and their three daughters aged eight, six and four, were travelling with him at the time of the fatal crash. They were released from hospital yesterday.

In other separate incidents, a man in his 30s was killed on Sunday morning when his motorbike collided with an SUV at Abbey Street, Cahir, Co Tipperary. There were no other people injured in the collision.

Meanwhile, Karl Brown, 24, of Cappagh Drive, Finglas, Dublin 11, died on Saturday afternoon when his motorcycle also collided with an SUV. The crash happened on the Cardiffsbridge Road shortly before 3.30pm, and a pillion passenger was taken to the later Hospital with serious injuries.

In the North, Alex Tanner, 31, from Castlerock in Co Derry, was killed when his motorbike was involved in a collision with a car near the village on Saturday.

Two gardai were also injured yesterday after their patrol car was struck from behind by another vehicle at a pedestrian crossing in Shannon, Co Clare.

The crash happened around 6pm at Tullyvarraga in Shannon Town Centre, when the patrol car collided with a Hyundai people carrier. The female driver of the Hyundai was also slightly injured, and all three were taken to the Mid Western Regional Hospital in Limerick.

This morning, a 21-year-old male was fatally injured when the motor car he was driving was involved in a single vehicle collision. His passenger, a man in his 20’s, was also injured. Both men were taken to University College Hospital Galway. The road was closed for technically examination and has since reopened.

Father And Son Killed On Kildare Road
A father and son have been killed in a tragic traffic pile-up in Co Kildare. The collision involved three cars, a mini-bus and a pick-up truck. It happened shortly after 8.30pm on the N9 between Kilcullen and Castledermot, close to Ballytore. The son in his 20s and father in his 50s were fatally injured in the collision.

Five Injured In Limerick Road Collision
Five people, including two children, have been injured in a traffic collision in Limerick. The incident happened at Rourke's Cross on the main Limerick to Charleville Road around 5:30pm on Thursday. Two cars collided and one of the cars spun out of control, hitting a woman and two children who were walking along the road.

Woman Dies In Cavan Road Traffic Collision
A 48-year-old woman has died and two others have been injured in a two-vehicle collision in Co Cavan. The accident happened at around 8.45am, 3km north of Cavan town. It is understood the dead woman was the driver of one of the cars involved in the crash. The driver and passenger of the other car – two women – both received serious injures.

Man Killed In Co Leitrim Crash
A man has been killed in a road collision in Co. Leitrim. The crash, which involved two cars, happened on the N4 at Carrick-on-Shannon around 8:10am on Tuesday morning. It is understood that the man who died was the driver of one of the vehicles involved in the collision.
