Irish Couple Killed In Us Road Crash

A married Irish couple have been killed in a road crash in Iowa in the US.

Both 50-year-old Joe O' Connell from the Causeway area of north Co Kerry and his 44-year-old wife Anne Coleman from Abbeyknockmoy, Co Galway were fatally injured in the crash that happened on Sunday night.

The couple's three children aged between 10 and 15 were injured, in what Iowa state police have said was a single-vehicle incident, about 250km west of Chicago, Illinois.

The family had emigrated to the US and were living in Madison, Wisconsin.

It is understood they were on holiday and travelling to the west coast when the accident occurred.

The couple were believed to have been prominently involved in the GAA in their native counties.

According to the Galway News, Ann Coleman was an accomplished camóige player and had won a Junior Title with the Galway Camoige team in 1988.

She also played camóige with Castlegar, St. Coleman's in Gort, Athenry and Glen Rovers in Cork.

She is the sister of former Galway footballer, Mattie Coleman and former Galway hurler, Michael Coleman.

Her husband Joe O' Connell was a former Kerry hurler and both the Abbeyknockmoy and GAA community in Galway have said they are shocked and saddened at the news of the tragic double death.
