Another Eight Arrests Near Corrib Gas Site

Another eight arrests have been made overnight near the site of the controversial Shell gas pipeline under construction in Co Mayo.

A Garda spokesman said two men were arrested at Glengad at around 7pm last night for alleged public order offences. They are due in court at 10.30am this morning.

The spokesman said six other people - four men and two women - were arrested at about 4.30am this morning at Glengad for allegedly attempting to disrupt dredging work at the pipeline site.

Earlier this month another eight people were arrested in the area after more than 100 demonstrators tried to gain access to the Shell compound.

There was a confrontation when officers, backed up by the Garda's public order unit, moved in to stop the protesters.

In April a masked gang entered the site late at night armed with chains and iron bars and took control of a mechanical digger, which they allegedly used to cause damage.

Private security guards hired by Shell alleged they were assaulted and threatened.
