Lowry To Meet Taoiseach As Govt Tallies Slim Majority
The Taoiseach is to meet with the Independent TD Michael Lowry as they scramble together a majority for Wednesday's vote of no confidence.
The Dáil will begin debating the motion, tabled by Fine Gael, at 2.30pm on Tuesday. However, the Government is expected to win tomorrow's crucial vote as they call in favours and put foreign visits on hold.
Dáil business has been cleared for Tuesday and Wednesday to allow time for the debate, which will begin after the order of business and Leaders' Questions to Taoiseach Brian Cowen.
The debate is due to continue until 8.30pm tonight, and then resume tomorrow, when the motion will be put to a vote at around 5.30pm.
At present the Government looks set to have a slim six vote majority, however, reports this morning suggest a back bench revolt could be looming.
The Independent TD Michael Lowry will meet Brian Cowen on Tuesday afternoon to discuss a number of matters before the vote, after claiming his support for the Government was conditional on the delivery of a package to his constituency.
Education Minister Batt O'Keeffe has reportedly cancelled plans to attend an EU meeting in Brussels so he could be in the Dáil for the crucial vote, which is threatening to destabilise the Government and trigger a general election if the Government fails to win a majority.
Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny and Labour Party leader Eamon Gilmore said the Fianna Fáil-Green Party Coalition no longer had a mandate to govern following the result of the local and European elections.
Sinn Féin Dáil leader Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin also confirmed on Tuesday that Sinn Féin TDs would vote no confidence in the Government in the Dáil vote.
