Motorcyclist Killed As Bank Holiday Looms

A motorcyclist has died in a road traffic accident in Co Offaly.

A 23-year-old male motorcyclist was fatally injured when the bike he was riding left the road.

Gardaí at Edenderry are investigating the collision that occurred shortly before 3pm on Thursday on the R401 at Carrick Road.

The R401 is the Edenderry to Kinnegad Road.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was removed to Tullamore General Hospital.

The road was closed at the time for a forensic collision investigation but has since re-opened.

Meanwhile, AA Roadwatch has warned motorists to expect Bank Holiday delays to build from this afternoon on national commuter routes.

This will be made worse by news that the M7 is this morning blocked northbound before J17 Portlaoise, on the Mountrath side, due to an overturned vehicle.

Drivers are being advised to take an alternative route until further notice and expect delays.

Today is also the last day of the Mizen Head to Malin Head Charity Cycle in Co Donegal.

Cyclists will depart Letterkenny at 10am and arrive in Malin Head at approx 2.30pm. Motorists are asked to drive with extra care and anticipate delays along the route.
