Martin Disgusted At Northern Security Alerts

Foreign Affairs Minister Micheál Martin has expressed his disgust over Monday's hijackings and bomb scares in the North.

The incidents are being blamed on dissident republicans and caused widespread traffic disruption in Belfast and Lurgan.

Mr Martin described them as "criminal, anti-social acts" which cause distress and inconvenience to many people going about their daily business.

He says such behaviour is devoid of purpose and serves only to raise tension and put pressure on police resources.

North Queen Street, Tennant Street, King's Way at Dunmurry, Blacks Road and Stewartstown Road – all major arterial routes – were closed because of alerts.

First Minister Peter Robinson said those behind the trouble were "beneath contempt".

"The criminal terrorists responsible for the series of bomb scares and hijackings have no support whatsoever in the community. Those who would try to destabilise and destroy Northern Ireland will fail. We won't be going back," he added.

Sinn Féin MLA for North Belfast, Carál Ní Chuilín, said they had "no strategy".

Ms Ní Chuilín said: "I would like the spokespeople of those behind these alerts to come forward and explain how this will in any way achieve a united Ireland."
