French Driver's 'Wrong Side' Mistake Killed Garda
An inquest heard this week that a Sligo based Garda was killed when a Frenchman "forgot where he was" and drove on the ride hand side of the road.
The officer, 25-year-old Yvonne Moran from Mulranny in Co Mayo was stationed in Ballymote Garda station.
She was being driven by her father Kevin on the 14th of September last year when the car driven by 27-year-old Remi Duclos collided with them head on.
Garda Moran died from her injuries after spending a day in Mayo General hospital.
A verdict of accidental death was returned at the inquest in Castlebar.
Duclos, formerly of the Park Inn, Mulranny, Co Mayo, but now resident in Galway, told the inquest that he accepted total responsibility for the crash in which 25-year-old Yvonne Moran died.
The dead woman's father said the other car came at them on the wrong side of the road so fast he barely had time to hit the brakes.
Tragically, at the time Garda Moran was on compassionate leave because one of her brothers had been seriously injured in a road crash.
Earlier this month, Duclos was fined €2,000 for dangerous driving and sentenced to six months in prison, the warrant not to issue for a period of 12 months on condition of good behaviour.

Man Charged Over Murder In The Phoenix Park
A man, 27, has appeared in court charged with the murder of Gerard Donnelly in the Phoenix Park on Friday. Mr Donnelly is believed to have been burned to death and he also had a fractured skull. Ciaran Moran the accused has been remanded in custody. Meanwhile, a 17-year-old has also been arrested in connection with the murder.

Man Arrested Over Dublin Body Find
A man has been arrested in connection with the murder of a man in Dublin last week. The body of Kevin Molloy was found at his home in Glendhu Road in Cabra, Dublin, on Sunday 01 February. Investigating garda said they believed Mr Molloy's body had laid undiscovered for some time.
