Strike 'Rejection' Ballot To Top Union's Agenda

The leading trade union IMPACT is meeting today to consider the result of a vote by members turning down a looming strike.

The vote narrowly failed to approve participation in next Monday's planned national day of industrial action.

Although 65% of those balloted voted in favour of taking part, under the union's own rule 66% support was needed.

The news was a setback to the Irish Congress of Trade Unions campaign of opposition to the Government's handling of the economy and the refusal of some employers to pay the national wage increases.

Other unions have been serving notice of industrial action including SIPTU workers at the country's three main airports.

Yesterday, a spokesperson for IMPACT, which is the country's largest public sector union, said that the vote did not necessarily mean that IMPACT members would not take part in Monday's strike.

The union's executive is examining the rule requiring the two-thirds majority to see if the executive has any discretion to go ahead anyway.
