Funding Shortfall Of €1 Billion On HSE Agenda

The board of the Health Service Executive is meeting on Thursday morning to discuss ways of tackling a funding shortfall of more than €1billion.

HSE Chief Executive Professor Brendan Drumm said that hard choices would have to be made to stay within budget.

The main opposition parties have already joined the debate, with Fine Gael Health Spokesperson, Dr James Reilly said the measures to deal with the HSE funding shortfall must start in the back room, protect the front line and should revisit consultants' pay which is due to increase.

"The HSE has shown ample evidence of being unable to manage its own budget. This incompetence has now been compounded by the worsening of the country's economic circumstances increasing the number and thus cost of medical cards and reducing the revenue from the health levy."

"Drastic cuts are in store but like all tough economic medicine it must be fair."

The rise in unemployment has contributed to the problem due to the dramatic fall in income to the HSE from the health levy, as well as an increase in demand for medical cards.
