Dáil Take Holiday To Deal With 'Reputation And Trade'

Despite the mounting pressures and the economy in tatters, the Government has called a week-long holiday.

The three main Opposition parties objected to the break and had proposed that the Dáil meet next Wednesday and Thursday.

But Tánaiste Mary Coughlan said there was a need to deal with Ireland's international reputation and trade, which she said should be the focus of all ministers who were travelling abroad.

On a vote, the holiday was approved by 67 to 53, and the Dáil is to take the now traditional holiday next week when many Government ministers will be abroad for the St Patrick's Day festivities.

Fine Gael Cork Senator, Jerry Buttimer, called for each Minister who is travelling overseas to represent Ireland this St. Patrick's Day to come before the Seanad to make a full report on what they achieved during their trip.

"It is important that Ministers are accountable for their overseas travel. In this time of economic recession, is essential to ensure that the message that Ireland is open for business, has an educated and competent workforce that is ready and willing to work is clearly conveyed.

"It is equally important, in light of the recent events in the north, to communicate to the world that we are a united people committed to a peaceful Ireland."

Senator Buttimer added that it was important that the week long holiday was not used for "leisure".
