Major Bus Strike Averted

The bus strikes threatening to lead to city centre chaos have been averted.

Strike action was been threatened by Dublin Bus workers after details of up to 160 redundancies emerged.

After negotiations at the Labour Relations Commission, unions and management at the bus company on Wednesday agreed a deal, which could remove the need for compulsory redundancies.

Workers are to take a vote on the union agreed proposals, which include voluntary redundancies as well as major work practice changes.

The strike threat had been imposed after Dublin Bus revealed its intention to slash 290 jobs and reduce its fleet by 10%, but despite the new agreement, the negotiations have not been able to prevent a sizeable reduction in bus services.

It is understood €8m will be set aside for a severance packages for senior staff members. The deal will be offered to around 120 staff aged 60 and over.
