SIPTU Announce Bus Workers' Strike Action

Workers at Dublin Bus and Bus Éireann are to stage two 48-hour strikes on 01-02 May and 15-16 May, SIPTU has announced.

The announcement follows a meeting held by the union on 13 April following the collapse of talks with the Labour Relations Commission (LRC), in an ongoing dispute over a proposal to privatise 10% of services.

The union claims that it had postponed a decision on further strike action to allow attempts to meet with the two bus companies. However, SIPTU Utilities and Construction Division organiser Owen Reidy, said: "In correspondence received from Bus Éireann on 16 April and from Dublin Bus on the 17 April, the companies refused to agree to a meeting and merely recommended that the LRC process should be reconstituted.

"It is outrageous that having taken a moderate approach to prevent industrial action by seeking direct talks with both bus companies, SIPTU has been met with such intransigence."
