Gerry Ryan Agrees To Pay Cut

The RTÉ radio broadcaster Gerry Ryan has finally agreed to join his colleagues by taking a 10% pay cut.

Ryan, who salary is €558,000 per year, had resisted taking the pay cut, leading to growing pressure from his listeners and RTÉ's management and the company's director-general Cathal Goan.

Last weekend a senior RTÉ management source is alleged to have told an Irish newspaper that Ryan, was "acting the maggot" over his failure to take the cut.

Making the announcement on Tuesday morning's programme, Gerry Ryan said he had spent a "long time coming to terms with this issue, soul-searching and thinking about this in order to have something meaningful to say".

He said: "It has taken me a long time to come to a decision and I apologise to those of you listening who think it has taken too long."

The veteran presenter of his eponymous Gerry Ryan Show, Ryan has never been far from controversy, with several up-held complaints to the broadcasting complaints commission about his show, and a widely publicised separation from his wife in 2008.
