Bank Chiefs Cash Up

Amid the growing banking difficulties, five top bankers have resigned from their posts.

The Chief Executive of Bank of Ireland, Brian Goggin, has resigned from the job today after five years in the position, while five directors on the board of Anglo Irish Bank have also resigned today as the Government prepares to take the firm into state ownership.

In a statement released today, Mr Goggin said: "The most recent period has been particularly difficult leading the bank through a time of great turbulence in global financial markets.

"An important milestone was reached in ensuring the long-term strength of the bank at the end of 2008 with the Government decision to support the recapitalisation of Bank of Ireland."

Mr Goggin added that he felt the time was right for a new chief executive to take over at the company.

Meanwhile, Noel Harwerth, Anne Heraty, Michael Jacob, Gary McCann and Ned Sullivan have written to the Anglo-Irish bank's Chairman to advise him of their decision to resign.

They say it will allow the Finance Minister Brian Lenihan to appoint new board members once the bank has been nationalised.
