Plane Makes Emergency Shannon Landing

A Virgin Atlantic plane has been forced to make an emergency landing at Shannon Airport.

During the Airbus 340 flight to Chicago from Heathrow on Sunday, the crew made emergency radio contact with air traffic control in Shannon and issued a mayday distress call.

The captain reported a fire, seeking permission to divert and land at Shannon, local emergency services were then put on standby with six units of the fire brigade dispatched to the scene, along with ambulances from Limerick city.

At 12.49pm the Airbus 340 plane made a safe landing. None of the 156 passengers were injured.

The problem is believed to have originated from a small amount of smoke coming from electrical wiring in the galley area of the plane.

It is now believed that an electrical fault in the cockpit caused a small fire and that the pilot opted to divert to the nearest airport.

The plane remains grounded at Shannon while arrangements are made to take the passengers onward to Chicago.
