Grounded Plane Cleared For Take Off

The plane forced to make an emergency landing at Shannon airport yesterday after a passenger allegedly claimed there was a bomb on board, took to the air again today after being given the all-clear by gardaí.

The Caribbean-bound flight's pilot diverted to Shannon yesterday morning after the 44-year-old man reportedly made the threat during a flight from Amsterdam to Aruba.

An extensive search of the Boeing 767 was conducted and the plane began its onward journey to the Caribbean shortly after midnight.

The man is being held by Gardaí in connection with the incident which resulted in the plane being grounded at Shannon Airport.

The flight was diverted to Shannon Airport and landed safely at 10.30am.

A 44-year-old Dutch national was been arrested under the Air Navigation and Transport Act and is currently detained under at Shannon Garda Station.

A spokeswoman for Dutch flight operator Arkefly said the man was being abusive to crew but was not physically threatening.

She said: "He seemed confused and aggressive and threatened that he had planted a bomb on board the plane."

The spokeswoman said a member of the crew guarded the man until the flight landed at Shannon and he was handed over to gardaí.

The Boeing 767 aircraft with 224 passengers on board was bringing passengers from Amsterdam to the Netherlands Antilles in the Caribbean.

It is understood the captain requested permission to land after a passenger became difficult.

The aircraft was parked remotely at Shannon to allow for its flight time to expire before take off today.

Sextuplet Passes Away
One of Ireland's first sextuplets has died. It was revealed today that one of Nuala Conway's four girls - born along with two boys on 22 May - passed away at a local hospital in the North. Their publicist Max Clifford confirmed the news and said: "Our hearts go out to the mum and dad and we hope that the others are going to be fine," he said.

Former Cranberries Singer Arrested On Suspicion Of Air Rage Assault
Dolores O'Riordan, the former singer with the Cranberries, has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting a flight attendant. It is understood that police were waiting for Ms O’Riordan when the flight from New York arrived at Shannon Airport at 5am on Monday morning.
