Gardai Cosider Mobile Finger Print Scanners

Mobile fingerprint scanners could possibly be the weapon on Ireland's streets for Gardaí.

The controversial blackberry-sized scanners are handheld devices, which can be used to scan fingerprints anywhere in the country and have details relayed back to the officer.

Already in use in the US and recently piloted in Britain, Gardaí will be able to check their 300,000 strong database against a print impression placed on a glass platen above an internal camera in the device.

However, the technology is controversial, as some believe the devices could be an infringement of privacy as they can be used to scan and retain prints on the street.

Police in the UK have had to reassure the public no prints taken would be used for surveillance or random checks.

An Irish newspaper has claimed it has received early confirmation that the scheme is set to go ahead, with a spokesman quoted as saying: "An Garda Siochana are constantly reviewing all technological developments for use by its members in order to enhance the delivery of its service to the community."

If given the go-ahead the project is expected to cost €17.5 million. But in recent years, finger printing has fallen foul of several findings of mistakes and weaknesses in the technique, which is gradually being overtaken by the DNA evidence for convictions.
