Taoiseach Meets Murphy As Major Investigation Launched

Brian Cowen and the Justice Minister Dermot Ahern are to meet the Garda Commissioner today as a manhunt begins for the killers of Shane Geoghegan.

The meeting comes as it is announced that over 50 gardaí, along with detectives form the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation begin working on the tragic murder.

So far, Gardaí believe a Limerick gang had shot 28-year-old Shane, a rugby captain who was engaged to be married, in cold blood in a case of mistaken identity.

Mr Cowen was reported to have specifically requested today's meeting, which is due to take place in his office in Government Buildings.

Mr Cowen will be fully briefed on the murder, the main figures on Limerick's organised crime scene and on the Garda's responses.

The murder has caused widespread outrage, and opposition parties have called on the Government to do more to end the violence from feuding gangs.

On Monday, Fine Gael urged the Government to introduce an assistant Garda Commissioner to be directly responsible for Limerick, such is the weight of the problem. While Labour's Jan O'Sullivan TD, from Limerick, called for the introduction of long-promised legislation allowing electronic surveillance to be used to secure convictions.

It has emerged that up to nine shots were fired at Mr Geoghegan as he tried to run from the gunman to his home just yards from where he was killed. He had spent Sunday at a friend's house nearby watching the Ireland-Canada rugby game.
