Criminal Asset Proceeds Should Go Back To Communities
Fine Gael Justice Spokesman Charlie Flanagan TD has called for the €10 million raised by the Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB) this year to be given back to the communities ravaged by the drugs epidemic.
The bureau, established in 1996, is responsible for reclaiming monies and assets acquired as proceeds of crime by criminals, and is a major player in te fight against organized crime.
The Fine Gael TD welcomed the report from the CAB, which showed the role played by this organisation in tackling serious crime and the bureaus impact in tackling drug crime, in particular, since it was set up by the Rainbow Government.
But Mr Flanagan added: "However, it is unfortunate that Fianna Fáil has not heeded repeated calls by Fine Gael to use the criminal proceeds seized by the CAB to rebuild the communities shattered by drugs. This year the CAB forwarded €10 million to the Revenue, funding which could have made an enormous difference in addressing the countless social problems arising from the drugs epidemic.
"Using the proceeds from CAB's activities to fund drug treatment and awareness programmes around the country would have immediate and clear benefits for the communities which are paying the price of the drugs trade."
The CAB presently costs over €5 million to run each year.
