Number Of Homeless Women On Dublin Streets Rises

The number of women facing homelessness in Dublin is significantly rising, according the Simon Community.

One hundred and forty eight women sought help from the charity's "rough-sleeper" team in the first six months of this year, compared with 71 for the same period last year.

The team said overall the amount of people seeking their help has increased by 48%.

Last week, the homless activists expressed disappointment at many of the Budget proposals saying the measures would disproportionately impact on the poor and those on low incomes.

Speaking about the Budget proposals including the 1% tax levy, Patrick Burke, Chief Executive of Simon, said: "There is a huge difference between what somebody on a salary of €90,000 can afford, compared to somebody on a salary of €20,000. We believe the VAT increase and income levy will hit those on the lowest incomes hardest."
