Gardaí Overtime Bill For Waterford Feud Tops €400,000

In an effort to keep the peace between 'warring' travelling community families, gardaí have worked over 12,000 hours in overtime, with an estimated cost of €400,000, it has been revealed.

According to reports, the feud between the two families in Waterford City has been gong on for the past two months and has been one of the most involved operations in the southeast, drafting in officers from Kilkenny, Wexford and Tipperary to deal with ongoing difficulties.

According to reports, the operation involved armed detectives patrolling the city 24-hours a day to monitor the feud between the Burkes and the Delaneys on the one side and the Mongans and the Stokes on the other.

Both disputes have already threatened to spill over into serious violence in a number of locations around the city.

The disputes have led to assaults, arson attacks and several shootings, and have resulted in 47 arrests so far.

However, mediation is said to be ongoing between the families, and tensions have dissipated in recent weeks following successful talks.
