Crystal Meth Seizure Sparks Garda Warning

The garda Commissioner has vowed he would not let the dangerous drugs, Crystal Meth, get a foothold in the Irish market following a major find.

Commissioner Fachtna Murphy said Ireland must pull together to battle the drug, which he believes is "worse than heroine".

Commissioner Murphy revealed his worry about the seizure of 6kg of the highly-addictive substance, officially called methamphetamine, at a press conference.

"I want to plead and to ask the public, nurses, doctors, teachers, parents, anybody who has information to report it to ensure this scourge of a drug doesn't come into this jurisdiction,' he said.

The Commissioner added that the Garda discovery of meth in Co Offaly last week was the biggest seizure of the drug in the state's history.

In response to the latest crime statistics showing narcotics offences have jumped 15% in the last three months, the Commissioner said: "I want to ensure that this doesn't creep into this country.

"It is my understanding that that is a very addictive drug and the mortality rate amongst addicts is very high, worse than heroin and that’s saying something."
