Tipperary Man Gets Life For Girlfriend's Murder

A 31 year-old man has been sentenced to life for the murder of his girlfriend last year.

Kevin Prendergast, of Knockeen, Grange, Clonmel, Co Tipperary was living with his 20 year-old, girlfriend Joanne Mangan in a rented house near Grange village in Tipperary when he murdered her.

The two had been in a relationship for around a year and were with a number of others including the deceased's sister, and brother at a party at the house late on October 15th.

When the guests had gone to bed, Pendergast and his girlfriend had an argument. She went out of the house and he went to the kitchen, taking two knives before following her out where he confronted her and then stabbed her a total of 14 times.

Pendergast pleaded guilty to the charges on Wednesday. He also pleaded guilty to causing serious harm to Joanne's brother Edmund and was sentenced to 15 years to run concurrent with the murder sentence.

The court heard that Prendergast had been binge drinking 'a vicious cocktail' which included vodka, Bacardi, cider, beer and absinthe, which he had brought back from Spain and 'which drives people insane', while he also took cannabis and Diazapan.

He was sentenced at Cork Central Criminal Court on Thursday morning.
