Life For Man Who Murdered Ex Girlfriend

A man who murdered his ex-girlfriend in a "jealous, drunken rage" has been sentenced to life in prison.

Gordon Molloy of Ballickmoyer, Co Laois was convicted on Monday at the Central Criminal Court of murdering his former girlfriend almost two years ago.

The court heard that the 24-year-old stabbed his ex-girlfriend Ciara Ní Chathmhaoil 27 times in an attack at her home in Ardmore Gardens, Carlow, in November 2007.

The 22-year-old mother of one and Mr Molloy had ended a two-year relationship five weeks earlier.

Molloy went to her house after drinking more than ten pints and waited for her to return after learning his ex had met another man

He then set upon her with a knife while her four-year-old son was present and placed her body in the bath and stabbed himself before writing the words 'I loved her but she cheated' in his blood on the living room door.

The jury rejected his defence claim that he suffered from a borderline personality disorder which diminished his responsibility for the killing.

After almost five hours of deliberations, the jury convicted him unanimously of her murder.
