€3 billion Lost On Irish Shares

Exacerbating ongoing economic problems, the main Irish banking stocks have fallen between 8-10% in the first hour of Tuesday's trading, knocking almost €3 billion off the value of Irish shares.

The Bank of Ireland is reported to have taken the biggest hit, seeing its shares plunge through the €5 mark to €4.55, a drop of over 10%.

Irish stocks were hit by US concerns over two of Ireland's biggest mortgage providers, which are predicted to announce a need to raise more money to strengthen their balance sheets, increasing scepticism on Ireland's likelihood for a quick recovery.

Anglo Irish Bank shares were also hit hard this morning, dropping over 9% to €4.97, with AIB stock shedding almost 8% to €8.25.

Irish Life and Permanent shares, which shed 9.9% yesterday after Moody’s lowered it outlook for the bank, slipped a further 9.3% this morning to €4.85.

Dublin brokers said Irish banking shares were being hit harder than their European counterparts, most of which were 4-5% lower this morning.

However, other European markets were also lower this morning with the FTSE 100 index falling more than 2.4% , the Paris-based Cac 40 index also traded around 2.5 lower as did Germany's Dax index.
