1,500 Jury Summonses To Be Issued For Anglo Irish Bank Accused Trial

Some 1,500 jurors are to be called for consideration in the trial of three former Anglo Irish Bank executives.

The trial od 64-year-old Seán FitzPatrick, of Whitshed Road, Greystones; 62-year-old William McAteer, of Auburn Villas, Rathgar; and 50-year-old Pat Whelan, of Coast Road, Malahide is due to begin in January 2014 and is expected to last between three and six months.

The three men are charged with 16 counts of providing unlawful financial assistance to individuals in July 2008 to buy shares in the bank.

It is understood that 1,500 jury summonses will be sent out, with 500 people expected to go forward for jury empanelling.

The date for jury selection is set for 10 January 2014 and the trial is due to begin the following week.

Jury Discharged In Kearney Trial
The jury in the trial of Brian Kearney for the alleged murder of his wife has been discharged. It is understood that the decision was made because one of the members of the jury worked for the company that fitted the alarm system at the Kearney's home.

Over 660 Motorists Found Speeding Over Easter Bank Holidays
More than 660 motorists were caught breaking the speed limit across the Causeway Coast and Glens during the Easter bank holiday weekend – an increase of 22% from 2022. Chief Inspector Sinead McIldowney said: "The Safety Camera Vans were deployed at various locations across the North Coast and the increase in these detections is a worrying trend.

North's No Jury Trials 'To Remain'
The North will still be able to hold court trials without a jury for the immediate future. Owen Paterson, the British Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, said today that he is laying before Parliament an Order to extend the Non-Jury trial provisions for a further period of two years.
