Two Of Ireland's "Greatest Thugs" Sentenced For Murder

Two brothers who beat a father to death in front of his screaming children have been sentenced to life in prison.

Warren and Jeffrey Dumbrell were reported to have been emotionless as they were convicted of the murder of Christopher Cawley and sentenced to mandatory life imprisonment.

Described by gardai as "two of the greatest thugs we've had on our streets in many years", the brothers were convicted at the Central Criminal Court on Thursday amid tearful scenes from the deceased's family.

During the trial, daughter Janice Cawley told the court jury, sitting in Cloverhill, Dublin, how she heard the sound of her father being struck echoing around the flats complex.

After the verdict was read out - following six hours of deliberation by the jury - the court was told that Warren Dumbrell had 26 previous convictions, including a 10 year sentence for starting a riot in Mountjoy Prison in 1997, as well as convictions for assault, larceny, misuse of drugs, possession of firearms and dangerous driving while his younger brother Jeffrey had eight previous convictions - ranging from public order offences to possession of firearms and larceny.

The pair had been in custody since their arrest in November 2006.
