The crash occurred on the N13, Letterkenny to Ballybofey road. A man driving a Volkswagen Passat collided with a Bus Eireann vehicle during its regular run from Derry to Donegal Town.

The driver of the Passat, a 34 year-old Donegal man, was pronounced dead at Letterkenny General Hospital.

Following the collision, the bus, which was fitted with seatbelts, turned over on it's side in a field. Of the 29 people on the bus, 27 were students of the Royal and Prior Secondary School in Raphoe, one student was taken to Letterkenny General with minor injuries, while the other 26 were admitted to hospital as a precaution.

A man in his 70's was taken to hospital with minor injuries and the bus driver was uninjured.

The road at the scene of the crash remains closed while Gardai carry out a forensic crash scene investigation and is expected to remain closed for a number of hours. Gardaí have advised anyone travelling between Ballybofey and Letterkenny to detour via Lifford.
