Redmond Acquitted

A fomer Irish civil sevant accused of being involved in a huge bribe attempt has been acquitted at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on one of the charges before the jury.

The jury found George Redmond guilty of receiving a £IR10,000 bribe from a Fianna Fáil councillor in relation to a compulsory purchase order (CPO) on 167 acres of land at Buzzardstown and Coolmine, in north-west Dublin.

The trial arose out of his sensational arrest on February 19, 1999 at Dublin Airport when he arrived from the Isle of Man carrying a bag in which there were bundles of Irish and Sterling notes and four stockbroker cheques with a total value of about £300,000.

Mr Redmond, 83, of College Gate, Castleknock, who retired from the public service in June 1989, had pleaded not guilty to two charges arising out of the CPO made in 1980.

He denied receiving £IR10,000 from the late Fianna Fáil councillor Mr Patrick Dunne on a date between October 10, 1985 and June 26, 1989 "as a reward for showing favour to another" in relation to the land and also on a second count of getting the money as an inducement in respect of the CPO.

The jury returned the first verdict following some five hours deliberation on day-18 of the trial and after spending Thursday night in a hotel.

Judge Joseph Matthews has advised the jury of three women and eight men that a majority verdict of 10-1 will be accepted on the second count.
