Australian Charged With Irishman's Killing

An Australian man has been charged with the murder of an Irishman who died from injuries sustained in a vicious assault.

Colm Kenny, 30, an engineer from Ballycastle, Co Mayo, was travelling on a tourist visa in Australia when he was viciously attacked and left for dead.

Passers-by discovered him lying motionless on a street corner at Byron Bay, about 750km north of Sydney in the early hours of May 11.

Yesterday Mr Kenny’s parents were attempting to come to terms with his murder, halfway through a dream two-year trip 'Down Under'.

Mr Kenny had sustained severe head injuries and was airlifted to hospital in Brisbane where he underwent emergency medical treatment. But he lost his battle for life at the weekend.

A 20-year-old man from Newrybar, on the outskirts of Byron Bay, has been charged with murder following an intensive investigation by police in New South Wales.

The man, who has not been identified by Australian media, made an initial appearance at Tweed Heads local court yesterday afternoon and was remanded on conditional bail to appear in court again on July 22.

Colm was the middle son of three children of John and Mary Kenny who live in the centre of Ballycastle village. John is a retired garda sergeant and Mary is principal of nearby Belderrig National School.

The couple have two other sons, Kieran and Ronan.
