Two Arrested Over Athlone Death

Two people have been arrested in connection with the suspicious death of an Athlone woman.

Lillian Scanlon, who was in her late 40s, was found dead on the kitchen floor of her house at 10am last Friday at Valley Court in Athlone Co Westmeath.

A post mortem examination has been carried out, however the exact cause of death is unknown.

A man and woman were arrested at different addresses in the Willow Park area of Athlone early this morning. They are both thought to be in their 50s.

The man is being questioned at Longford Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. Meanwhile, the woman is being detained at Athlone Garda Station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

It is understood the man being questioned can be held for a maximum of 24 hours, while the woman can be held up to 72 hours.

Ms Scanlon, originally from Clara, Co Offaly, had been living in Athlone for some time. She was a separated mother of three.

An Post Advises Customers Against Sending Mail
An Post has advised customers not to post any letters or parcels until further notice due to industrial action by workers. Staff at IO Systems maintain the sorting process in Dublin, Athlone, Cork and Portlaoise. However, a 14 day notice of industrial action had been issued by the Communications Workers' Union (CWU).

Regional RTÉ Studios Saved In New Agreement
An agreement reached with local institutes of technology has saved RTÉ’s five regional studios. The stations studios in Waterford, Dundalk, Athlone, Galway and Sligo will close and will instead be based within the institutes of technology. The agreement means that all regional correspondents will be retained and there will be no job losses.

Irish Game Stores Unaffected By Rescue Deal
Irish jobs will not be saved by the sale of Game Group to private investment firm OpCapita. The agreement guarantees the jobs of nearly 3,200 Game Group employees in Britain but the employees working in the 14 stores that closed across Ireland last week remain jobless. A total of 121 jobs where lost when Game stores were shut.

Man Dies In Farm Accident
An elderly man has been killed in an accident on a farm in County Westmeath. The incident happened on the man's own farm near Athlone yesterday. The man, who is believed to be in his 70s, became trapped in a slurry tank. Gardai are investigating the incident.

Three Due In Court Charged With Burglary In Athlone
Two men and a woman have been charged in connection with the burglary of a shop in Athlone, Co Westmeath on Sunday 19 June. The 21 and 49-year-old men, and 22-year-old woman, are due to appear before Mullingar District Court this morning, Thursday 23rd June. A large amount of cash was taken during the burglary.
