Psychiatric Nurses Discuss Further Protests

The unions representing psychiatric nurses is to meet on Wednesday to discuss engaging in further industrial action over compensation.

The SIPTU and Psychiatric Nurses Association (PNA) is presently in a bitter row with health chiefs over the affair, in which psychiatric nurses claim they do not receive adequate compensation when attacked or injured by their patients.

The dispute has already seen the union ban its members from working overtime, which has meant the closure of beds in Dublin with hostels and day services forced to shut their doors.

PNA General Secretary Des Kavanagh warned they are prepared to force management into a crisis situation by withdrawing services.

Since Thursday, PNA and Siptu members have worked rostered hours only. Bans have also been put on place on assisting admissions, accompanying patients to Tribunals, and attendance at non-essential meetings.

Schizophrenia Ireland and Mental Health Ireland both expressed concern about the ongoing dispute and have urged for a speedy end.
