Make Gang Membership Illegal Says TD

A Fine Gael TD has called for gang membership to be criminalised following increasing gang tensions and violence.

Charlie Flanagan TD said the criminal gangs should be "hounded out of business" as he warned some areas of Limerick are "now only a step away from open gang warfare".

Mr Flanagan's comments come after the announcement by the Justice Minister, Brian Lenihan, of an armed unit to be deployed in the city to patrol the known ganglands.

Mr Flanagan said: "The targeting of a housing estate with a submachine gun while women and children were inside marks a new level of depravity.

"I welcome all the initiatives being taken by Gardaí and other State organisations to restore law and order to the affected parts of the city.

Mr Flanagan however criticised the Justice Minister for not implementing surveillance policies to tackle the issue.

He said: "Four years ago, the Association of Garda Sergeants & Inspectors wrote to former Justice Minister Michael McDowell asking for greater powers to conduct electronic surveillance of major drug dealers and other serious criminals. This has never happened."

Brian Lenihan visited Limerick on Wednesday and met with the Garda Commissioner to discuss methods of tackling gang violence.
