Alert On 'Drowning Your Shamrock'
Three people will drown in Ireland over the coming St Patrick's Day weekend.
According to figures, there are an average of three such deaths around each 17th March, with alcohol being part of the problem.
The report, from Irish Water Safety (IWS), is based on statistics gathered by the organisation over the last 10 years.
Alcohol is a contributory factor in approximately one third of all drownings, according to the figures.
IWS has warned about the increased risk of water related accidents and tragedies this weekend as the number of people taking to activities in and around water will increase.
The report went on to say that the figure will decrease if the public observes a responsibility to protect themselves, family and friends from the dangers of cold shock, hypothermia and excessive alcohol consumption.
