Second Man Dies After Chip Shop Attack

A second man involved in a frenzied attack in Dublin has died in hospital.

The 29 year-old man, Pavel Kalite from Poland, is the second man to die after being attacked in a chip shop along with a 27 year-old man, Marius Szwaijkos, who died at the scene.

It is believed both men received stab wounds to the head with a screwdriver after an altercation with some teenagers outside the shop on the Benbulben Road in Dublin.

A murder inquiry has been underway since the first death on Saturday night. Mr Kalite had been critically ill in hospital since the violent attack.

A 17 year-old is being questioned by garda in relation to the incident, and several other teenagers who were initially detained have since been released.

Detectives have now pieced together the details of what took place at Benbulben Road between 6.30pm and 7pm on Saturday.

They believe remarks were passed by a gang of local youths about the Polish workers, who became upset.

The youths, along with a number of girls, began pushing and shoving the two men, who returned to their nearby home.

Mr Kalite then came out of his house again and walked towards the youths who were gathered outside, he was allegedly then stabbed in the throat with the screwdriver by a teenager.

He fell to the ground before Mr Szwajkos ran out with a female friend and he was struck in the side of the head with the screwdriver, which is thought to have punctured his brain.

A file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
