More Patient Delays If HSE Proposals Go Ahead

Patients in the north east face longer delays for surgery and specialist care if a series of proposed budget cuts are imposed in a Health Service Executive (HSE) bid to break even this year.

Under the proposals, the recently opened €1m emergency treatment room at the troubled Monaghan General Hospital would be shut down, re-igniting fears that lives will be put at risk as emergency care is shifted to Cavan General Hospital.

Also put forward are plans to cut elective surgery by 20-25% in the Our Lady's Hospital in Navan, the Louth County Hospital in Dundalk and the Cavan/Monaghan hospital group.

The hospitals concerned are already struggling with surgery waiting lists.

Already, large numbers of patients in the north east are opting to be treated in overcrowded Dublin hospitals and this will increase the pressure on the capital's infrastructure.

A HSE spokesperson said: "No decisions have been taken on reducing services in the north east. We are facing a challenging year and we are exploring how best to deliver services within budget.

"We should be in a position by mid-February to be more definitive about the services we will provide for the year."

No final decision has yet been made about any reductions in service.
