Cigarettes worth €3m seized in Dublin

Custom officers at Dublin Port have seized nine million contraband cigarettes.

The ‘Raquel’ brand cigarettes, with an estimated street value of €3.1 million, were found hidden in a container arriving from Belgium.

The contents of the container, registered to a fictitious company in Co Monaghan, were described as household goods. However, the cigarettes were discovered following an x-ray scan of the 45-foot trailer.

Customs said that the find represented a potential loss to the exchequer of approximately €2.5 million.
