€1.7 Billion Allocated To Roads In 2008
The National Roads Authority has unveiled a programme that will see 170 kilometres of new road being built.
A total of almost €1.7bn is due to be spent on road projects over the course of 2008. The money will fund 434 projects around the country.
The NRA maintain that more than half the new roads started this year will be finished within 12 months.
Phases One and Three of the M50 widening project in Dublin, between Ballymount and Blanchardstown, are scheduled for completion this year, as well as upgrades to other national routes.

New measures designed to tackle MOT waiting lists have been announced by Infrastructure Minister John O'Dowd. Speaking in the Assembly on Monday, 11 March, Mr O'Dowd said he will explore the introduction of temporary exemption certificates and proposals to consult on testing every two years.

Massive Drop In Roads Spending
It has been revealed that just one new national road building scheme will start construction this year. Under a reduced €1.44 billion national roads allocation budget for 2009, only the Castleisland bypass in Co Kerry will join 16 other major road schemes currently under construction with a total length of just under 500 kilometres.

Translink Workers Reject Pay Offer
Translink NI workers have rejected a pay offer from the public transport company. Unite, GMB and SIPTU confirmed that their members has "decisively voted to reject as inadequate" a pay offer made by Translink management. Workers were offered a 5% pay increase and a non-consolidated one-off payment of £1,500 for the 2023-2024 financial year.

NRA Call For Introduction Of Additional Tolls On M50
The National Roads Authority (NRA) has called for the introduction of more tolls on the M50 in an effort to address gridlock on the countries busiest road. The NRA said that "effective measures" were needed to address congestion on the M50, and that traffic control decisions needed to be "taken now".
