Bomb Alert Hoax Chaos

Thousands of people were forced to flee a bomb alert in Dublin that later proved to be an 'elaborate hoax'.

Large numbers of people had to be evacuated from the centre of Dublin city at the weekend.

An estimated 2,500 people were ushered from the area around O'Connell Street when the 'device' was spotted at a hotel shortly after 11pm on Saturday.

An Irish Army bomb disposal team carried out a controlled explosion on the device at the Clifton Court Hotel in the Eden Quay area.

A defence forces spokesman said later it contained no explosive content.
