Eco-Friendly Car Tax System Unveiled

Environment Minister John Gormley has unveiled a new system of car tax, which aims to encourage motorists to buy more environmentally friendly cars.

The new system, part of Mr Gormley's 'carbon budget' unveiled in the Dáil today, will be split into seven bands, according to the amount of emissions they produce, rather than engine size.

The new system, which will be introduced from July 1, 2008, will see cars with the lowest carbon emissions being charged €100, while cars with the highest emissions will be charged €2,000.

Other measures announced by Mr Gormley included the development of a national energy efficiency standard for lightbulbs, which will see an end to the use of old-style incandescent bulbs by the end of next year.
