Ireland Introduces National Postcode

The Dáil has approved the introduction of a national postcode system, which will be a combination of letters and numbers.

These codes will be similar to the county initials used for car licence plates.

For example, Galway would become 'GAL 123' and Athlone 'ATH 123'.

A Government commissioned report said codes would provide long-term savings and demographic details for planning as well as benefiting emergency services.

The Minister for Communications, Eamon Ryan, (pictured here) said: "A central part of our national infrastructure, this system will improve the delivery of post in Ireland."

Ryan also affirmed that he expects new system to be introduced in 2011.

Nowadays, Ireland is the only European country without a postcode system in operation.

The job of setting up the new system will now go out to tender and is expected to cost between €10m and €15m.

"The cost of the implementation will be more than met by the benefits identified. We need this system to develop the knowledge economy and link up policy planning across government,'' said Mr Ryan.

"The benefits will be across society and are greater than can be quantified. This is a good move for Ireland," he added.
