Gaol Death Probed

A prisoner in Limerick gaol has been found hanged in his cell.

While Gardai at nearby Roxboro have confirmed that they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of an inmate at Limerick prison at the weekend – the man's family have slammed a system that jails a man with obvious addiction problems – handing out punishment rather than treatment.

It has also been revealed that the Limerick Prison governor will also carry out an internal inquiry.

The deceased was Michael Ryan, a 26 year-old from Kilmallock.

He was found hanging in his cell around 9 o'clock on Saturday night by a prison officer.

There was no one else in the cell at the time.

Mr Ryan was serving a three-month sentence for being drunk and disorderly.

A spokesperson for the Irish Prison service said that an internal enquiry will also be carried out by the Governor of Limerick Prison, Tadgh O`Riordain.

The Limerick man's family have been highly critical of the decision to send the 26-year-old to jail.

His family say he was addicted to drugs and alcohol and was in need of assistance - not a prison term.

They were informed last Saturday night that Michael had hanged himself using a bed sheet.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Michael's uncle Tom O'Carroll said prison was not the right place for his nephew.

Meanwhile the President of the Irish Association of Suicidology is calling on the Justice Minister to make a statement on the circumstances surrounding the death of Michael Ryan.

Dan Neville wants to know how prisoners with mental health problems are dealt with in our jails.
