Talks Aim To Halt School Bus Strike

Just weeks after a bus drivers' dispute about new routes and working practices almost brought parts of central Dublin to a halt, talks are now getting under way aimed at averting Friday's planned one-day strike by Bus Éireann school bus drivers.

The Labour Relations Commission hopes to halt the strike, which would mean that over 14,000 children will have to make alternative travel arrangements.

The part-time drivers work 21 hours a week and are paid €11.66 per hour but say they get no pension, sick pay or the other benefits that full-time drivers get.

A claim for equal treatment has already been rejected by the Labour Court so they have launched a new pay claim.

SIPTU National Industrial Secretary Michael Halpenny said he was sure parents would understand that €11.50 an hour was not adequate compensation for people who do a responsible and necessary job in society, and hoped for their support.
