Lone Parents Trapped In Poverty Says Report
A new report, by the One Parent Family Research Steering Group in Galway, has said that many single parents want to return to work, but are concerned about the impact it would have on their children.
The researchers are calling for urgent changes in supports for lone parents to help them escape the poverty trap and get back to work.
They said that a survey in Galway has found that they face difficulties finding suitable part-time employment, as well as affordable and accessible childcare.
The rent allowance system is also identified as a barrier because many parents would lose the payment if they returned to the workforce.

€13.5m Funding Into Health Research
€13.5m is to go towards funding for new health research projects announced today by Minister for Health, Leo Varadkar. A total of 36 projects are being supported by the Health Research Board (HRB) over the next three to five years, including research into cancer, asthma, kidney injuries and antibiotics.

New School Transport Safety Campaign Launched
The Minister for Education and Minister for Skills, Research and Innovation, have announced a new school transport safety campaign – Buster and the Belt-Ups. The campaign will feature animated characters in a new safety video to be distributed to national schools and posted to YouTube and buseireann.ie.
